IQ Technologies Inc. is an engineering consulting firm founded in 1999 by Dr. Michael Aronov, Joseph Powell (President of Akron Steel Treating Co, of Akron, Ohio), and Dr. Mykola Kobasko. John Vanas (President of Euclid Heat Treating Co. of Cleveland, Ohio) joined the company in 2002.

Our prime mission is to commercialize our proprietary, intensive quenching processes for steel parts, known as IntensiQuench®, in the US and abroad, and to provide intelligent solutions for your heat-treating problems.

What Is The IntensiQuench® Process?

The IntensiQuench® process is an alternative method for quenching steel parts performed in highly agitated water or low-concentration salt solutions. In contrast to conventional heat-treating practices, intensive quenching requires very high cooling rates during martensite formation. IntensiQuench® is interrupted when the part's current surface compressive stresses reach their maximum, and the part's surface-hardened layer reaches an optimal depth. Then the parts cool in the air, and the hardened surface layer is self-tempered by heat from the part's core.

IntensiQuench® Process Benefits

The IntensiQuench® process provides the following benefits validated by Case Western Reserve University, Proto Manufacturing, Oakridge National Laboratories, US Army Benet Laboratories, and customers:

  • Increased surface and core hardness and greater hardened layer resulting in stronger or lighter parts, higher power density; possibility of substitution of less costly, lower alloy and carbon steels for high alloy steels.
  • High residual surface compressive stresses resulting in stronger parts with longer fatigue life.
  • Low and repeatable (predictable) part distortion.
  • Reduction of carburization cycle by 30-40%, resulting in reduced heat treatment cost.
  • Possibility of full elimination of carburization cycle, allowing single part processing of heat treatment operations within manufacturing cell (lowers inventory requirements).
  • Quenching forgings right from the trim press, allowing, in many cases, a full elimination of post-forging heat treatment operations and reducing production lead time.
  • Green, environmentally friendly processes, lower energy cost, no oil.

The IntensiQuench® process is conducted in batch or continuous IQ water tanks (standalone or integrated in an atmosphere furnace) and in single-part processing high-water-flow-velocity IQ units after furnace or induction heating.

Standalone 600-gallon IQ water tank equipped with an atmosphere box furnace

11,000-gallon IQ water tank that is a part of the integral quench furnace

Fully automated IQ system that consists of the standalone 2,500-gallon IQ water tank, an atmosphere pit-type furnace, and a pick-and-place device for transferring the hot load from the furnace into the IQ tank

Standalone single-part quenching high water flow velocity IQ system equipped with an induction heating station for quenching gun barrels and long shafts

Single-part quenching high water flow velocity IQ system equipped with an induction heating station for processing gear products and shafts

Standalone IQ unit for single-part processing of automotive torsion bars coming out of a continuous atmosphere furnace

Fully automated IQ system consisting of the standalone single-part quenching high water flow velocity IQ system, an atmosphere rotary-type furnace, and a pick-and-place device for transferring hot gear products and shafts from the furnace into the IQ unit

IntensiQuench® Process Know-How

The key element of the patented IntensiQuench® process is to provide uniform cooling of the parts and to interrupt "intensive" water cooling when the compressive stresses on the parts' surfaces reach their maximum. The IQ Technologies' "know-how" includes the following:

  • Software packages and experimental databases for calculating the proper cooling recipes for various alloys and for parts of different shapes and types.
  • Designs of batch, continuous, and single-part processing IQ equipment that provide uniform cooling at required heat extraction rates for loads and parts of various configurations.
